Birch's manufactures a full range of Legal robes to customer's exact measurements, in traditional style, attending diligently to every detail.

Magistrate's Robe

A black gown with silken braid on yoke and sleeve cuffs, with a 5 cm wide Dark Scarlett Red band affixed to the center of the front panels and parallel on either side of cuff braid. (As stated in regulation 17 as amended in terms of the Magistrates Act of 1993).

Advocate / Barrister's Robes

Manufactured to the traditional English style with sleeve pleats and pouch attached to the back. Two theories exist regarding the pouch that appear on these robes: one is that it harks back to the 14th century when the defence deposited remuneration into the pouch, which resembled a large pocket sewn into the gown with an opening between the shoulders. This was done in secret as gentlemen in those days did not accept money in exchange for defending a friend. The second theory is that the pouch is a derivative of the mourning robe adopted following the death of King Charles II in 1685. The fashion still remains to this day, though neither theory can be accurately confirmed.

Judge's Robes

Judges robes manufactured in traditional red including cincture, hood and gunbag. Available in two fabrics, Polyester Cashmere and Lt Wt Wool and Trevira.

Accessories such as box pleat lace jabots, lace jabots and plain jabots as well as Advocate's bags with initials hand embroidered in traditional script are also manufactured in our modern factory which employs well skilled and experienced machinists.
